The decision
Is Heritage actually closing?Answered
Not yet. On September 3, 2026 the district recommended closing five elementary schools, Heritage among them. A recommendation is not a decision: the Board must hold a public hearing and then vote. That is why the hearing on September 22 matters.
District closure recommendations, September 3, 2026 →Why is Heritage on the list?Answered
The district gives three reasons: the age and condition of the building, accessibility and floor-plan issues, and the fact that Heritage sits on a high school campus.
District closure recommendations, September 3, 2026 →When would a closure take effect? No answer yet
We have not seen a published, confirmed timeline for Heritage specifically. This is one of the questions we have formally asked the district.
Can the Board still change its mind?Answered
Yes. The vote has not happened. Public comment at the hearing, letters to Board members, and turnout are the levers families have before the vote.
Where students would go
Which schools would Heritage students go to?Partly known
The district named Brougham, Havencroft and Madison Place as the adjoining schools for Heritage students. Individual boundary assignments have not been published.
District closure recommendations, September 3, 2026 →Do those schools have room?Partly known
Nobody outside the district can say for certain. The district publishes a combined functional capacity of 16,360 across the 28 schools that would remain, but no figure for any single building. Our capacity estimator lets you test the numbers yourself using the district's own average.
Would my child be bused, and how far?No answer yet
Not published. We have asked the district for the transportation consequences of reassignment, including ride times and new bus stops.
Would classes get bigger? No answer yet
The district has not published projected class sizes per grade at the receiving schools. Its own planning figures average about 21 students per K-5 teacher.
Students who need extra support
What happens to special education services and IEPs?No answer yet
We have asked for written protections for individual students, including how IEP and 504 services, staffing, and specialist rooms would move with children. We do not have that in writing yet.
Would my child stay with their teacher or classmates? No answer yet
No commitment on keeping classes or staff together has been published.
Money
How much would closing Heritage actually save?No answer yet
The district has presented savings at the program level, not an itemized figure per school. We have asked for a line-by-line breakdown for Heritage, including what costs simply move to another building.
What would it cost to keep Heritage open?No answer yet
Also not published. We have asked for the repair and operating cost of keeping the building open, with the evidence behind it.
What happens to the building and the land?No answer yet
We do not know, and we will not repeat rumors. We have asked the district to state its plans for the site in writing.
What families can do
What is the single most useful thing I can do?Answered
Come to the public hearing on September 22 and add your name to our list so we can tell you exactly when and where to show up.
Can I speak at the hearing?Answered
Public hearings normally include a public comment period with sign-up rules set by the Board. Check the Board's meeting page for the current procedure before the date.
Olathe Board of Education →Is this an official district website?Answered
No. This is a parent-led community campaign. It is not affiliated with Olathe Public Schools. We only publish what we can source, and we keep unanswered questions clearly separate from facts.
Do you collect information about children?Answered
Never. Our sign-up form asks only for adult contact details, and we use them only to share campaign updates.
